Southern Relationship

The Educational Component of the West Virginia Courtesy Patrol was developed by Southern in the fall of 1998 in conjunction with the CCC. All Courtesy Patrol drivers are given the opportunity to participate. This educational plan is extremely flexible, allowing each individual to learn at his or her own pace in targeted field area(s) geared towards future success and self-sufficiency.

Southern's Program Coordinators are the backbone to making this unique and innovative approach in the delivery of the educational component a success. The Program Coordinators work with the WVCP Field Supervisors to adjust drivers' work schedules to ensure that learning objectives and goals are met. The coordination and facilitation of this innovative and comprehensive "delivery of services" occurs statewide in over 30 counties. No other educational program of this kind exists in the country, which is why many USDOL and governmental officials have recognized it as a national training model.

Additionally, Southern provides assistance to participants in applying for financial aid, scholarships, and grants. The CCC is able to offer AmeriCorps Education Awards up to $4725.00 to eligible drivers that can be used in a variety of ways, including paying off existing debt from student loans. Furthermore, participants attend workshops; engage in apprenticeships and interviews with prospective employers, along with many other educational/training initiatives and opportunities. This program is measured through various means: increased educational levels, enhanced or upgraded skill levels, and earnings gain rates from better means of employment beyond the WVCP. Through the continued operation and administration of this unique program, individuals are receiving an opportunity of a lifetime. In turn, they are providing a path of self-sufficiency for their children to follow in their footsteps.
